Important Notice Regarding Hurricane Helene Medical Relief Efforts in Our County
We are grateful for the outpouring of support from relief groups offering to help following the impact of Hurricane Helene. However, we would like to reassure our community that all of our local medical facilities are fully operational, the field clinic at Burnsville FD remains open, and we have community paramedics actively making house calls to ensure that everyone in need is taken care of.
At this time, NO ADDITIONAL MEDICAL RELIEF GROUPS ARE NEEDED IN YANCEY COUNTY.
Unfortunately, there have been fraudulent organizations taking advantage of this disaster. We have encountered some groups that are falsely claiming to be medical professionals or relief workers, including individuals posing as doctors and nurses without valid licenses. These groups are not only misleading the public but also scamming people out of money.
Please be cautious and verify the credentials of anyone offering assistance. Please do not accept any credentials if they are pictures on a phone or a handwritten name tag. Please do not believe them if they say a local official’s name has sent them to your home. These types of medical support groups offering assistance have not communicated with us or gone through the proper channels within our county EM. Thus, when they leave, we have no idea which individuals they’ve checked on, and who we need to continue to check on after their departure.
Our local government and established relief teams will continue to coordinate efforts to provide proper care and support.
If you encounter any suspicious activity or believe you’ve been approached by an unlicensed or fraudulent group, please contact the Sheriff Department immediately.
Stay safe and healthy, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
