How to Spot Red Flags in Everyday Situations
Staying safe often comes down to picking up on little signs that something just isn’t right. Whether you’re grocery shopping, at work, or hanging out with friends, it pays to keep your eyes open. Here are a few things to watch for:
- Unusual Behaviors
- Is someone pacing, fidgeting, or scoping people out too intensely? Signs of stress or ill intent often manifest in restless movements or intense staring.
- Gut Feelings
- If something feels “off,” it probably is. Trust that instinct! Your intuition often flags danger long before your conscious mind catches on.
- Objects Out of Place
- A random backpack that seems abandoned? A door propped open that’s usually locked? Odd items out of place can be a tip-off that something’s up.
- Changes in Tone or Volume
- In a group setting, sudden shouting, heated arguments, or an eerie hush in a once-lively room can mean trouble is brewing.
- Proximity Cues
- Is someone crowding your personal space or hovering around you without a good reason? That could be a distraction technique or a way to unsettle you.
What can you do about it?
- Stay alert and observe without making it obvious.
- Listen to that inner voice—if you feel uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation.
- Be prepared to act if things go south.
Remember: safety starts with awareness.
A Few Extra Warnings
- Don’t hand over money upfront for jobs to people you barely know.
- If someone makes you feel uneasy, think twice before letting them into your home—especially if you’re alone.
- Avoid signing documents you don’t fully understand or with people you don’t trust.
- Keep insurance or FEMA payouts private. It’s nobody’s business but yours.
- Don’t send strangers from online to check on vulnerable family members, like your grandparents. Even seemingly “legit” organizations can be phony.
We’re seeing more and more scammers by the day, so I’m urging you: please be careful. I care about every single person in this community, and I want everyone to stay safe!
