How to Prevent Your Pipes from Freezing
As temperatures drop, it’s important to take steps to prevent your pipes from freezing. Here are some tips to help you protect your home:
Insulate Pipes: Use pipe insulation or heat tape to cover exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like basements, attics, and garages.
Seal Cracks and Openings: Seal any gaps or cracks around doors, windows, and where pipes enter your home to keep cold air out.
Keep Garage Doors Closed: If you have water supply lines in your garage, keep the doors closed to maintain a warmer temperature inside.
Let Faucets Drip: During extremely cold weather, let cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe—even at a trickle—helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Open Cabinet Doors: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall.
Maintain a Consistent Temperature: Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. During a cold snap, set it no lower than 55°F (13°C).
Disconnect Hoses: Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets, drain them, and store them indoors. Use faucet covers to protect outdoor spigots.
By following these tips, you can help ensure your pipes stay safe and functional throughout the winter.
