    Fire Safety After Disaster

Stay safe & keep our air clean!

Debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina.

As our region dries out, fire chiefs urge everyone to avoid open burning whenever possible. Check for local burning bans or restrictions, and consider using storm debris collection services if available.

    BURN WITH CAUTION

If burning is absolutely necessary, follow this guidance from our local fire marshals to help prevent wildfires:

Keep burn piles small—no more than three feet in diameter and height.

    Never leave a fire unattended.

Have a way to extinguish fires nearby (water, dirt, motorized equipment, or fire extinguisher).

Clear all burn areas of combustible debris or vegetation.

Stay at least 25 feet from structures and wooded areas (increased from 15 feet due to current conditions).

    WHAT’S OKAY TO BURN

Recent legislation by the State of North Carolina allows these materials to be burned until March 31, 2025:

    Solid and engineered wood products

    Vegetative debris from land clearing

Yard waste (vegetative matter from landscaping)

    WHAT’S NOT OKAY TO BURN

These materials may release dangerous pollutants into the air:

Inert debris like asphalt shingles, tar paper, insulation, drywall, concrete, bricks, or glass

    Tires, wire, or plastics

    Any dangerous or hazardous materials

    BEFORE YOU BURN

Wind direction must be away from all areas within 250 feet, including public roads.

Burn at least 500 feet away from any occupied buildings or businesses not on your property.

Burn Bans: Do not burn if there’s a burn ban from the NC Forest Service or your local fire marshal.

Air Quality Days: Do not burn if the air quality forecast is Code Orange or higher.
